OpenSCAD - The Programmers Solid 3D CAD Modeller

OpenSCAD is not an interactive modeller. Instead it is something like a 3D-compiler that reads in a script file that describes the object and renders the 3D model from this script file (see examples below). This gives you (the designer) full control over the modelling process and enables you to easily change any step in the modelling process or make designes that are defined by configurable parameters.

  1. I thought the software was interesting. Why?

  2. Could this be used to convert SU models into solid model formats suitable for CNC machines?

  3. Hi daiku.

    Not really.

OpenSCAD parses a script to create geometry. SketchUp would need to be able to export a model as a script, or in some other format that could be converted into an OpenSCAD format.

You probably knowe SU Pro can export as .dxf and .dwg - are these not suitable for CNC machines?

The other common machining format is .stl. Here are 3 .stl exporters that you might try:

    [1] Didier's stl exporter
    [2] CADSpan
    [3] Guitar List dxf/stl exporter

  4. I am curious about the possibility of creating an OpenSCAD script interpreter for SketchUp. So SketchUp could load OpenSCAD scripts and create geometry from them.
